UCLA Ends Season in NCAA Match Play Quarterfinals

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Emma Spitz and Zoe Antoinette Campos both won their matches on Tuesday, but the No. 14 seed UCLA women’s golf team saw its season come to an end in a 3-2 decision to Auburn in the NCAA Match Play Quarterfinals at Grayhawk Golf Club.

A trio of Tigers in Megan Schofill, Kaleigh Telfer and Mychael O’Berry secured the three points to move on to the match play semifinals against Stanford later in the day. Emma Spitz and Zoe Campos both notched points for the Bruins.

Spitz won her matchup with Elina Sinz handily, leading by six points with seven holes to play at one point. Spitz finished with a four-point margin as Sinz conceded the final three holes.

Campos held a three-point lead heading into the last three holes of the day when Auburn’s Anna Foster cut the gap to just one with one to play. On the final hole – the par-4 9th – Zoe Campos knocked down a seven-foot putt to pull away and bring UCLA to a 2-1 lead.

Telfer ousted redshirt freshman Alessia Nobilio by two points shortly thereafter to even the score, 2-2.

Caroline Canales needed to mount a two-point comeback in the final three holes in order for UCLA to advance to the semifinals. Canales’ last chance came on the par-3 eighth. Her shot off the tee fell short of the green by a foot and would two putt. O’Berry matched Canales’ par with one of her own, pushing the Tigers to the semis.

Canales conceded the final hole.
