Plata, Nagel to Tee Off this Weekend in the Meijer LPGA Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – If anyone is around the Meijer LPGA Classic on Thursday or Friday, they are sure to hear a fair amount of cheers of “Go Green.”

When the professional golf tour’s event starts its first round on Thursday, a pair of Michigan State women’s golfers will be teeing off in the same pairing during the first two rounds.

The 2022 Meijer LPGA Classic will take place from June 16-19 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The official tour event will feature 144 of the world’s best players competing over four days.

Current MSU golfer Valery Plata and former Spartan Liz Nagel will tee off in the same group on Thursday morning at 9:16 a.m. The same group will start on Friday at 2:16 p.m.

This is the second-straight year Plata will play in the Meijer LPGA Classic, as she received a sponsor’s exemption last year. She made the cut and put together a solid four days to finish in a tie for 70th at 4-under par (284).

“I’m really excited to be back at Blythefield and tee it up with the best players in the world,” Plata said after her practice round on Wednesday. “It is an opportunity you can’t take for granted and I’m really thankful to be in this position again.”

Playing in this year’s Meijer LPGA Classic has added excitement for Plata since she will be paired up with Nagel, who posted the then-fourth lowest-scoring average in program history and helped lead the Spartans to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

“It’s really nice to be playing with a fellow Spartan,” Plata said. “I think it just makes the whole experience much more enjoyable and it brings an added comfort level in a way. Besides, there are a lot of MSU fans who come out to watch so it’s fun to hear all the ‘Go Green’s’ while we play.”
