The LIV Golf Invitational Series is well under way after the inaugural tournament at London’s Centurion Club saw several high-profile players, including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen, compete for the $25m purse.
South African Charl Schwartzel won the opener, claiming $4m in prize money. Meanwhile, Oosthuizen’s Stinger GC won the team event and a share of $3m in prize money. An identical purse and prize money breakdown is on offer in the second tournament at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Oregon.
The field for the event is even stronger than the opener, with the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer, Brooks Koepka and Matthew Wolff signing up. Controversially, it takes place at the same time as the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. Following that, the third event in New Jersey will be played at the same time as the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Michigan.
Although dominated by US venues, there are also tournaments in Thailand and Saudi Arabia before the Series concludes with October’s Team Championship at Trump National Doral in Florida. Following the second tournament, there will be another in July, two in September and three in October including the finale at the end of that month.
Each of the remaining regular team tournaments will offer the same $25m purse as the first two. Of that, $20m will be distributed in individual prize money in stroke play competition and $5m will be shared between the top three teams.
After the conclusion of the final regular event, an Individual Champion will be crowned, with $30m on offer for the top three individuals of the season. The winning player will receive $18m, the player in second $8m and the third-placed player $4m. This is only available to participants who have played in a minimum of four events.
The season concludes with the Team Championship, which has double the purse at $50m. As its name suggests, that’s a team-only affair, with the prize money shared between all 12 teams. The winning team will receive $16m and the team finishing last will receive $1m. Each player…
