WITT RELISHING HOME FEELING AT AMUNDI GERMAN MASTERS

Rookie Sophie Witt is enjoying life on the Ladies European Tour (LET) and is excited to be playing on home soil in the Amundi German Masters.

The 19-year-old earned her Tour card in December last year at La Manga Club, where she recorded rounds of 71-72-76-69-72 to finish T12 as an amateur.

Having earned status on the LET for 2022, Witt decided to turn professional and prepare for a busy year ahead.

The teenager, who lives in Dusseldorf, has played 12 events and has two top-10 finishes to her name and sits sixth in the Rookie of the Year standings.

“I didn’t expect that my rookie season would be that good,” she said. “For me it is good to have my mum with me because everything is new.

“Every single week we have a new course, new country and new people. It is good that my mum has the chance to come with me or my dad too. I have also made a lot of friends here, so it is like a family.”

It is the first time the LET has been back in Germany since 2016 and Golf & Country Club Seddiner See plays host to the 72-hole stroke play tournament this week.

Witt is one of 14 German players in the field and despite being a few hours from home, there is still a family feel this week with being on home soil.

“I’m very excited! Being back in Germany, even though I’m not that close to home, it still feels like home,” she continued.

“It is nice because I know all the German players and I know the promoter really well, so it is nice to be here and enjoy the week.

“I like the course; it will be tough with the wind because it’s wide open and the bunkers have a lot of sand. You nearly always have a plugged ball in the greenside bunkers and the greens are small, so it’s not that easy. Your game needs to be on point.”

But despite her good results so far this season, Witt isn’t placing any pressure on herself to play well and hopes instead to enjoy her home tournament.

She added: “My game has not been the best, but the results have been coming. It could be better, but it could be worse too. My driving is pretty good and my putting too, in between it could be better.

“This week I hope to enjoy the event and play my best. I don’t think I’m in the position to make some expectations for the week ahead.”
