Madeleine Sheils Named Associate Head Women's Golf Coach

BOULDER – Madeleine Sheils, NCAA champion coach and former tour professional, has been named the Associate Head Coach of the University of Colorado women’s golf program, Buffaloes head coach Anne Kelly announced on Thursday.

Sheils, who officially begins her position on July 1, replaces Brent Franklin, who recently retired after 20 years as an assistant and associate head coach on Kelly’s staff.

Prior to joining Colorado, Sheils teed off her collegiate coaching career with three successful seasons as an assistant coach at Pac-12 Conference rival Stanford (2019-22). Sheils helped Stanford to the 2022 NCAA Championship, its second in program history. She assisted the Cardinal to NCAA Finals appearances in both of her seasons a championship was completed (2019-20 was canceled due to COVID) as the team earned the top seed into the final eight teams of match play, following 72 holes of stroke play, on both occasions.

The Cardinal won the 2021 NCAA Stanford Regional and tied for second in the 2022 regional on its home course. Sheils helped guide the Cardinal to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the 2021 and ’22 Pac-12 Championships.

“I’m fired up to join CU golf and move to Boulder,” Sheils said. “As an excellent academic and athletic institution set in the country’s most beautiful college town, the University of Colorado is a dream location for me to coach and live. Coach Kelly is well-known for her kindness and care for her student-athletes, and I am grateful for the chance to learn from her. I think together we are going to make a great team as we look to compete for titles and provide a world-class experience for our players both on and off the golf course.”

In 2021-22, the Cardinal was the unanimous No. 1 team in the country from start to finish, defeating No. 8 Georgia, No. 5 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon in match play to claim the national title. Stanford freshman Rose Zhang won the NCAA Individual title, capping off a season in which she recorded an NCAA record 69.68 scoring average. Zhang followed in the footsteps of her teammate Rachel Heck, who won the 2021 NCAA Individual National Championship and also broke the NCAA scoring average record during her own freshman campaign. Both Zhang and Heck were named the ANNIKA Award winner, WGCA Golfer and Freshman of the Year, Honda Sport Award winner for Golf, Pac-12 Golfer and Freshman of the Year, and first team All-American and All-Pac-12.
