There was a big boost in payouts on the PGA Tour during the 2021-22 season. There were also some big spikes in purses and first-place money at the four major championships.
The purses at the Masters and the PGA Championship were bumped to $15 million in 2022. Those two majors also had the same first-place payday.
The U.S. Golf Association put up a purse of $17.5 million for the U.S. Open and had the highest winner’s payout among the majors.
The British Open’s total purse was set at $14 million in 2022, a 22 percent increase on 2021 and a 60 percent increase on 2016.
In all, the top prizes at the four men’s golf majors in 2022 totaled $11,050,000.
2022 Masters – $2,700,000

Scottie Scheffler’s first major win was a big one at the 2022 Masters Tournament. He earned $2,700,000, which was up from the $2,070,00 awarded to Hideki Matsuyama in 2021.
The 86th Masters Tournament also set a record with a $15 million purse, up from $11.5 million in 2021. Second and third place in 2022 also earned seven-figure checks, $1.62 million for second and $1.02 million for third.

“You will see a very significant spike, as well, in our purse,” PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh said ahead of 2022 PGA Championship.
And Justin Thomas did, as he pocketed $2,700,000 for his win at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in May, a first-place check that matched the winning prize at the Masters.
The PGA Championship total purse in 2022 matched the Masters at $15 million.
2022 U.S. Open – $3,150,000

Of the four majors in 2022, the USGA put up the biggest purse and largest first-place prize.
