DURHAM – Duke men’s golfers have stayed in the headlines recently, with Kelly Chinn reaching the quarterfinals at the Western Amateur a week after qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship, William Love reaching the round of 16 at the U.S. Junior Amateur, and three former Blue Devils qualifying for the PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs.
Three Alums In FedExCup Playoffs
Following the completion of the Wyndham Championship, PGA Tour fans turn their attention to the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 125 players on the Eligibility Points List qualify for the first round of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn. The top-70 eligible players from that event will qualify for the following week’s BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club, with the top-30 from that event moving on to the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Duke fans will recognize three names in the field – Alex Smalley (’19), Adam Long (’10) and Kevin Streelman (’01)
Streelman is extending his current streak of qualifying for the FedExCup Playoffs every year he’s been on Tour after finishing in 83rd place this season. He’s finished in the top-10 twice this year, including a 24-under second-place finish at the Barbasol Championship just over a month ago. His best finish in the playoffs last came in 2013 when he ended the season with a tie for 24th at the TOUR Championship.
After securing his PGA Tour card in September 2021, Smalley ends his rookie season in 61st place. He’s finished in the top-25 in four of his last six appearances including a tie for 10th at the Genesis Scottish Open and a tie for 13th in last week’s Wyndham Championship. He has nine top-25 finishes this season and had his season-best finish when he shot 16-under at the Corales Puntacana Championship and tied for second place.
Long is currently 76th on the Eligibility Points List. He’s finished in the top-25 10 times this season, including a recent stretch of four out of the last five tournaments he’s played in. His best finish of the season is a tie for 11th at the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open. Long has qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs in all four seasons he’s been a PGA Tour member, and his best finish in the playoffs came in 2020 when he ended the year at 31 in the standings.
