MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men’s golf head coach Mike Wilson has named Ross Thomson as the Badgers’ new assistant coach.
“I am thrilled that Ross is joining the program. He’s worked with the top players in the professional game for the last five years. His knowledge as a player and caddie will be a major asset to our program,” said Wilson.
“I’m excited to have a person with Ross’ skill set to be around the team on a daily basis.”
A graduate of Charleston Southern University in 2014, Thomson golfed for the Buccaneers under Wilson and was a four-time Big South All-Conference selection. He has spent the previous five years as a professional caddie working with the PGA, Korn Ferry Tour and LPGA and worked with professional golfers Rory Sabbatini, Braden Thornberry, Doug Ghim, Normon Xiong and Sarah Schemezel, among others.
Originally born in South Africa, Thomson grew up in Georgia. In his final year at CSU, he helped lead the Buccaneers to a runner-up finish at the 2014 Big South Men’s Golf Championship and was named the CSU 2013-2014 Male Athlete of the Year. A four-year letterwinner, he became CSU’s career leader in rounds played with 120, eagles with 14, and birdies with 313 in his senior season, capping off a career in which he rewrote the CSU record books. Thomson also highlighted his career with a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Big South Conference Championship. The Buccaneers were also selected as the 2014 Big South Team Sportsmanship Award winner. Thomson earned his bachelor of arts degree in communications.
As a professional caddie, Thomson has specialized in course and emotional management, in addition to a high level of knowledge of the game and strategy for the players he’s worked directly with across the nation. Additionally, Thomson has worked professionally in production management and sales in the private sector.
He will begin his coaching duties at Wisconsin this month.
