UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (August 10, 2022) — Rutgers golfer Leigha Devine wrapped up a successful week at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Chambers Bay Golf Course in Washington on Thursday afternoon.
Devine finished tied for 18th after the first two rounds of stroke play and advanced to the match play portion of the tournament. After defeating Lynn Lim 2 and 1 on Wednesday, Devine fell to Aneka Seumanutafa 3 and 2 on Thursday in the Round of 32.
Tournament Recap
The first two days of the tournament were stroke play, with Devine starting off the tournament with a strong first round of 2-under 71 to finish t-12 on Monday. She continued her quality play in the second round on Tuesday evening with an even-par 73, including a birdie to close out her round on the par-3 ninth hole.
Devine finished the stroke play portion of the tournament 2-under, t-18 and secured a spot in match play on Wednesday. The low-64 scorers through stroke play advanced, while the rest of the field was cut following Tuesday’s play.
Devine’s t-18 finish in stroke play was the best-ever finish for a Scarlet Knight in stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur. With her top-64 finish, Devine also became the first-ever Rutgers golfer to advance to the match play portion of the event.
In the Round of 64 on Wednesday, Devine teed off against Vanderbilt signee Lynn Lim, who is ranked #832 in the Women’s Amateur Golf Rankings. Devine put forth a very strong effort, leading the match by as many as four holes before ultimately winning 2 and 1.
On Thursday in the Round of 32, Devine was matched up against Aneka Seumanutafa of Ohio State, who is ranked #156 in the WAGR. Devine kept things close up until the 16th hole and ultimately dropped the match 3 and 2.
