WILMINGTON, Del. – UCLA men’s golf alumni Patrick Cantlay (2010-11) earned his eighth victory on the PGA Tour at the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club on Sunday. Cantlay’s win marks the first time a player defended his title during a FedEx Cup Playoff Tournament.
Cantlay bogeyed the 10th hole and faced a two-shot deficit heading into the final eight holes before he made his run. A 13-foot putt on the 11th for birdie and another red circle on the scorecard on the mammoth 622-yard, par-5 14th brought him a share of the lead with Scott Stallings.
With a little luck, Cantlay’s 17th tee shot bounced just inches short of a bunker and kicked from the rough and into the fairway. He hit a tidy shot from roughly 70 yards out to just five feet from the pin, setting him up for birdie and a one-shot lead and the victory.
Cantlay, who shot 14-under to par to defeat Stallings by one stroke, jumps five spots in the FedEx Cup standings to second place. He seeks to defend his 2021 FedEx Cup title.
Next week, Cantlay heads to the Tour Championship beginning Aug. 25 at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga. to accomplish the historic feat once again. Cantlay won the 2021 Tour Championship title by one stroke (-21) over Jon Rahm (-20).
As a result of his victory, Cantlay has automatically qualified to compete for Team USA at the 2022 Presidents Cup held from Sept. 19-25 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.
