Bears To Play Three Tournaments In Bay Area
The Cal women’s golf team will stay close to home for much of the fall season according to the 2022 schedule that was announced Wednesday.
Three of the five fall tournaments in which the Bears will compete will take place in the Bay Area, including the season-opening Olympic Club Invitational on Sept. 12-13. Cal will also team up with the Bears’ men’s golf team to take on Stanford in the third edition of the “Big Match” at the Peninsula Country Club in San Mateo on Sept. 29. Cal will be back in the South Bay on Oct. 21-23 for the Stanford Intercollegiate.
The Bears will also take part in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Oct. 3-5 and the Pac-12 Preview in Kailua Kona, Hawai’i.
The Big Match debuted in 2018 and features Cal and Stanford’s men’s and women’s golf programs combining for a match play competition. The Bears won each of the first two showdowns, and it wasn’t contested in 2020 or 2021.
Cal, which qualified for the NCAA regionals last season for the 21st time in the past 22 seasons, returns two of its top three scorers from last season in juniors Mika Jin and Cristina Ochoa. The Bears have also added three accomplished freshmen as well as transfers Annika Borrelli (USF) and Kaylyn Noh (Cal Poly). Borrelli qualified for Stage II of LPGA Q-School last week and has won the past two California Women’s Amateur championships. Noh was the Big West Golfer of the Year last season and won the NCGA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship in June.
Ochoa won the NCGA Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship last week in Pebble Beach.
Cal’s spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
