Columbus Dispatch’s Rob Oller reflects on Tom Weiskopf’s career

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State golfing legend and Hall of Fame member Tom Weiskopf passed away this past week at the age of 79 after a year-and-a-half battle against pancreatic cancer.

Weiskopf was an All-American in his lone season with the Buckeyes in 1962. Credited with having one of the finest swings in the game, Weiskopf went on to win 16 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1973 British Open. At one point in 1973, his best professional season, Weiskopf won five tournaments in eight weeks. He registered Top 3 finishes in all four of the majors during his career and had a total of five runner-up finishes.

He also won four times on the Champions Tour, including the 1995 U.S. Senior Open. In addition to his success on the PGA Tour in 1973, Weiskopf went to South Africa and won the South African PGA Championship that season.

Weiskopf represented the United States in two winning Ryder Cup performances in 1973 and 1975 as well as the World Cup in 1972.

His love for the game and worldwide travel led Weiskopf to success off the course as well. He was a fine analyst, working for ABC/ESPN and CBS for over 20 years. Weiskopf was also a renowned golf course architect, which he credited fellow Buckeye Jack Nicklaus for the inspiration. He has over 40 worldwide that he has either designed or co-designed. A few of the most recognizable are the Monument and Pinnacle courses at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., Loch Lomond, the venue of the Scottish Open from 1995 to 2010 and the Ocean and Cliffs course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, site of five U.S. Open Championships. Locally, Weiskopf designed the prestigious Double Eagle Golf Club in Galena, Ohio.

Weiskopf was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985. During the week following his passing, members of the PGA Tour and Champions Tour wore purple ribbons in remembrance of him and to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.
