Lewis, Surratt Named to Haskins Award Preseason Watch List

Two Tennessee men’s golfers—redshirt junior Bryce Lewis and freshman Caleb Surratt—were both named to the 25-man preseason watch list for the Haskins Award, the Haskins Foundation announced Thursday.

Tennessee is one of just four schools with multiple golfers included on the watch list.

Presented annually to the top college golfer in the nation and in its 53rd year, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel has been given to players who have captured 33 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments around the world.

Past recipients include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, and Justin Thomas. The Fred Haskins Award is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, golf SIDs, and select golf media.

Lewis is entering his fourth season competing with the Vols and coming off of a 2021-22 season in which  he earned a spot on the 2022 All-SEC second team.

Lewis finished the 2021-22 season second on the team with a 70.97 stroke average—the third-best single-season mark in program history—while also recording three top-10 finishes this season and finishing inside the top 25 during six of Tennessee’s eight spring tournaments. Lewis was also second on the team in counting rounds (27.5) and rounds of par or better (18).

For his career, Lewis has recorded 17 top-25 finishes, six top-10 finishes and an individual win at the 2021 Country Club of Birmingham Invitational.

An incoming freshman to Tennessee’s program, Surratt won this summer’s inaugural Elite Amateur Series—posting four top-five finishes in Elite Series events—at the Sunnehanna Amateur (T-4th), Southern Amateur (4th), the Pac Coast Amateur Championship (T-2nd) and the Northeast Amateur (3rd).

The Indian Trail, North Carolina, native is also coming off of a runner-up finish at the U.S. Junior Amateur in July.

At the time of his signing, Surratt was ranked as the No. 2 player in the country by Junior Golf Scoreboard. Prior to his arrival at Tennessee, he had already captured multiple notable tournament wins—including the 2021 Junior PGA Championship, the 2021 Western Junior Championship, the 2021 Bobby Chapman Invitational and the 2021 Terra Cotta Amateur.
