SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 19 Wake Forest men’s golf team opened up the season on Friday and were led by a historic round by freshman Boyd Owens in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.
The Baton Rouge, La. native, who was playing in his first collegiate round, set a program record for the lowest debut round with a 63 (-7) in Scottsdale, Ariz. Additionally, it is tied for the fourth lowest score in program history.
Owens ended his day on a hot streak, carding a 29 (-6) on the back nine with six birdies and no bogies and goes into the season round tied for second on the leaderboard and three shots off the individual lead.
As a team, Wake Forest finished the opening round at 8-under-par as a team and sits in seventh. The Deacs are only four strokes out of second place on the team leaderboard.
The Demon Deacons will tee off their second round on Saturday starting at 12:40 p.m. ET. Wake Forest will play alongside East Tennessee State and Auburn for the second-straight day as the teams tee of No. 10.
Fellow freshman Andrew McLauchlan shined in the Maui Jim Individual at Desert Mountain, turning in a debut round of 64 (-8) that was bogey free and included six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth. McLauchlan holds a one shot lead after 18 holes and is one of three Deacs in contention for the individual title.
Sophomore Collin Adams, who is tied for third, is two strokes back at 6-under-par and junior Clay Stirsman, who is tied for fifth, is three strokes back at 5-under-par.
