Michigan State in Second Place at Gopher Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team has three players among the top-20 overall and is in second place among 15 teams after the first day of play at the Gopher Invitational, being played at Windsong Farms Golf Club in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Spartans posted scores of 9-under par 275 and 3-under par 281 in two rounds on Sunday and are in second place with a 36-hole score of 12-under par 556.

First Round Results

Rutgers leads the field at 15-under par 553, three shots ahead of MSU. Kent State and Georgia Southern are tied for third place at 11-under par 557 and Furman is in fifth place at 9-under par 559.

Fifth year Troy Taylor II is tied for ninth place at 4-under par 138 following rounds of 3-under par 68 and 1-under par 70, respectively.

Junior August Meekhof and sophomore Ashton McCulloch each posted scores of 3-under par 139 and are tied for 14th place. Meekhof shot a 3-under par 68 in the first round and closed with an even-par 71. McCulloch opened with a 1-under par 70 and followed it with a 2-under par 69 in the second round.

Senior Bradley Smithson is just one shot back at 2-under par 140 and is tied for 21st place. He carded a 2-under par 69 in the first round and an even-par 71 in the afternoon.

Senior Drew Hackett is tied for 50th place at 2-over par 144 with back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 72.

Michigan State will tee off at 9:45 a.m. (ET) on Monday, paired up alongside Rutgers and Kent State.
