Three Huskies In Top-13; UW Finishes 5th At Maui Jim

Three Washington golfers finished among the top 13 individuals as the Husky men’s golf team wrapped up its first competition of the 2022-23 season with a fifth-place finish at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
 
Petr Hruby finished the three-day tournament at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., with an 11-under total of 199. On Sunday, he shot a 3-under 67, to finish in a tie for eighth place overall.
 
“Petr played a great tournament despite injury limiting his ability to practice,” said UW head coach Alan Murray. “He showed maturity and patience to go along with his considerable skill, and 11-under par for the week was nice playing.”
 
Hruby was joined in the top-20 by Huskies Taehoon Song (tied for 11th) and Bo Peng (tied for 13th). Song carded a 6-under 64 in the final round, the best of the weekend by a UW player and tied for the best round of the day overall, to complete the tournament at 9-under. Peng posted his third straight round under par Sunday, with a 1-under 69, to finish at 8-under for the tournament.
 
“Taehoon is the man for the final rounds and he has a history of going deep in round three,” Murray commented. “His bogey-free 64 was a big round for us and he played so well today. He will take a lot of confidence from a good performance in a strong field. We’re so proud of him.
 
“Bo was steady today and just didn’t make enough putts,” Murray added, “but his ball striking has been really good for the most part. A little bit of sharpening up around the greens and he will be contending for titles.”
 
Washington entered Sunday in seventh place, but managed to climb two spots up the team leaderboard with the second-lowest team-score of the day. The Huskies’ 11-under 269 was added to a 269 on Friday and a 9-under 271 Saturday to account for their final team score of 809. Auburn won the tournament with a 45-under 795.
 
“I’m really proud of how we played in the final round,” said head coach Alan Murray. “The goal was to move up the leaderboard and we did that in a really strong field. Being greedy, we had a chance to finish in third, but a couple of bogeys on the back nine halted our momentum. For the first tournament of the year, there were a ton of positives.”
 
Song’s round was highlighted by six birdies and no bogies. Hruby’s 3-under day included five birdies. Overall on Sunday, Washington’s five players made 23 birdies and 14 bogies, with…
