Akabane, Bruins in First after Two at USF Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO – Three Bruins headline the top 10 as the No. 5-ranked UCLA women’s golf team owns two-shot lead (-4, 564) on the 10-team field at the USF Intercollegiate. Ty Akabane sits atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under following a pair of 3-under 68’s at The Olympic Club on Monday.

California trails the Bruins in second place by two strokes (-2, 566).

Akabane entered the competition with the lowest round of her career a 4-under 69 in at the 2019 Nanea Pac-12 Preview. Today, she bested that 18-hole score not once, but twice.

Akabane, who began both her first and second rounds on the fifth hole, recorded seven birdies and just one bogey across her 36 holes. That bogey came on her 26th hole of the day.

Joining Akabane in top 10 are sophomores Caroline Canales and Alessia Nobilio, tied for 6th in a field of 56 golfers.

Nobilio – an ANNIKA Award Preseason Watch List member – bounced back from her 2-over 73 first round with five birdies in her second round. Canales signed a 69 on her first round scorecard with four birdies, including two on the 13th and 14th to secure a bogey-free back nine.

Senior Annabel Wilson, a semifinalist at the 122nd U.S. Women’s Amateur this summer, is tied for 21st. Wilson also shot a 2-under 69 in her first round of the season.

UCLA’s four counting scorers tee off in the final two groups on the first hole tomorrow at 10:12 a.m. and 10:23 a.m. PT.
