East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team shot a 10-over par 578 over two rounds and is in eighth place among 14 teams in a deep and talented field at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Classic, being hosted by the University of Tennessee at Cherokee Country Club in West Knoxville.
The Spartans struggled in the opening round with a 10-over par 294, but bounced back with an even-par 284 in the second round.
The 14-team field features nine teams ranked among the top-50 in the country by Golfstat. The field is led by No. 13 Virginia as the Cavaliers fired a 15-under par 553 and holds a two-shot lead over No. 36 UCF, second at 13-under par 555.
Wake Forest (No. 4) is in third place at 9-under par 559, while Kent State (No. 45) is in fourth place at 6-under par 562 and Virginia Tech (No. 28) rounds out the top-five teams at 2-under par 566. Michigan is in sixth place at even-par 568, with Tennessee seventh at 3-over 571 and the Spartans in eighth place.
Sophomore Brooke Biermann leads the Spartans, standing in a tie for 10th place at 3-under par 139. She posted a 1-over par 72 in the first round and fired a 4-under par 67 in the second round.
Fifth year Valery Plata is one shot back, tied for 13th place at 2-under par 140. She finished at even-par 71 in the morning round and came back with a 2-under par 69 in the afternoon.
Junior Valentina Rossi is tied for 42nd place at 5-over par 147 following rounds of 3-over par 74 and 2-over par 73, respectively.
Junior Leila Raines, playing in her first event of the year, is tied for 61st place at 10-over par 152 (77-75) and sophomore Katie Lu is tied for 63rd place at 11-over par 153 (78-75).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Shannon Kennedy shot a 3-under par 68 in the second round.
The Spartans will tee off starting at 9:45 a.m. (ET), playing alongside Purdue and Tennessee in the final round on Tuesday morning.
