Leigha Devine Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 21, 2022) – After making history at the Badger Invitational with a t-1st finish and 54-hole tournament record, Leigha Devine was named Big Ten Golfer of the week on Wednesday afternoon.

It marked the first time Devine won the award and the first time a Rutgers golfer has received the honor since Anna-Maria Diederichs in March 2022.

Devine’s 7-under 209 to tie for first at the Badger Invitational and shattered the previous mark of 213 shared by Federica Torre (Old Dominion, 2021) and Carlie Werwie (Wisconsin, 2010),

She entered the final round 3 strokes back after a 3-under 69 on Monday, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the 12th hole. She began Tuesday’s final round on the 8th hole and sat at 3-under after her first 11 holes of the day. Devine made a huge push to close out her round, birdieing the 1st, 4th and 5th holes to storm all the way up to a tie for first place at 7-under for the tournament.

In addition to being a tournament record, her 54-hole mark of 209 was a career-low, as was her final-round 68 on Tuesday.

“I am so proud of Leigha’s performance this week,” head coach Kari Williams said. “To earn the win against such a strong field and on a very demanding golf course was an impressive feat. Leigha demonstrated incredible mental resilience through the 1.5 hour weather delay with a putt and one hole remaining, while knowing that she was in contention for the title. What a memorable tournament for Leigha to have earned her first career victory. Since setting her goals last year, Leigha has worked on her physical and mental game in order to compete at the highest level every time she tees it up, and she went out and earned this win to jumpstart her year. As a program, we are excited to celebrate Leigha and all of her hard work.”
