Strong Play from Wells, Marcoux Highlight Men’s Golf 8th-Place Finish at Bearcat Invitational


CINCINNATI, OH — Seniors Luke Wells and Xavier Marcoux led the Rutgers men’s golf team to its second straight 8th-place finish of the fall at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati. 
 
The fellow team captains kept the Scarlet Knights in top-five contention all tournament. After two rounds of play, Rutgers sat in 6th place out of 13 teams. Wells finished the first two rounds with a score of 138 (-4), putting him in 2nd place. Not far behind, Marcoux shot 140 (-2), securing him a tie for 8th.  

 
After three rounds of play, Wells and Marcoux finished 13th and tied for 14th, respectively.
 
As a team, Rutgers finished with a score of 863 (288-283-292). The Scarlet Knights’ final score left them only three points out of 5th place, with Memphis finishing with a score of 860 (291-284-285). The tournament winner and host, Cincinnati, finished with a final score of 845 (277, 285, 283). 
 
Sophomore Weston Jones also had a strong outing, as he finished play tied for 30th place. The Massachusetts native earned a score of 217 (+4). Other than Wells and Marcoux, he was the only Scarlet Knight to finish a round under par, with his second-round total of 70 (-1).
 
Junior Rhett Sellers and freshman James Newton also contributed solid strokes throughout the tournament. The pair finished Tuesday with totals of 221 (+8) and 234 (+21), leaving them in a tie for 44th and 75th place, respectively. 
 
Rutgers will seek to continue its fall success at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitatonal, hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., on September 26 and 27.
