'Cats Historic Final Round Wins 2022 Windon Title

SKOKIE, Illinois – On a crisp September day on Chicago’s north shore where only two teams were under-par, Northwestern men’s golf fired a 10-under 270 in Tueday’s final round to win the 2022 Windon Memorial Classic championship at Evanston Golf Club.

The Wildcats entered Tuesday’s third-and-final round in 7th place after 36 holes Monday, 12 shots behind the leaders but undeterred in their ambition knowing that familiarity with the course would work to their advantage with aggressive play. The team was in the first group of tee times off No. 1 in the morning and wasted no time ascending the leaderboard.

John Driscoll III birdied his first three holes and four of his first five. James Imai followed three straight pars with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6. Cameron Adam, Daniel Svard and David Nyfjall combined for five birdies through their first six holes as well and the ‘Cats were nine-under before the leaders even got on the course.

Northwestern’s scoring quintet had just seven scores over par in 90 holes during the day and finished the round with a 10-under 270, tied for the lowest round in Windon history (California, 2014) and waited patiently by the 18th green as groups finished midday. When it was all said and done, the ‘Cats were the only team to finish the competition under-par at -2, nine strokes clear of Kent State and Little Rock tied in second place. Individually they put a remarkable four golfers in the Top-13 on the leaderboard led by Nyfjall in fourth. The team title was Northwestern’s sixth at the program’s signature event, half of which have come at Evanston Golf Club, including the team’s last win in 2017.

North Florida’s Robbie Higgins won individual medalist honors with a 6-under 204, tied for the lowest 54-hole score in tournament history.

Northwestern will take the momentum of the win north next weekend for the Marquette Intercollegiate, Oct. 2-3 at Milwaukee Country Club, currently the 70th-ranked golf course in the U.S. by Golf Digest.
