Gators Defeat Mississippi State 3-2 to Close out SEC Match Play

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The Florida men’s golf team wrapped up the final day of the SEC Match Play with a 3-2 defeat of Mississippi State on Tuesday.

Quentin Debove continued his momentum into match play after finishing T12 and matching his career low of a 54-hole score of 203 (-7) in stroke play. The junior won the first hole and led 4-up until he dropped only his second hole of the match on eight. He clinched the Gators’ first point with a 5&4 victory.

After the Bulldogs tied the match 1-1, Fred Biondi pushed Florida ahead 2-1 with a 3&2 win. Dating back to last year’s SEC Championship, Biondi has not dropped a match vs. SEC competition. He tied in the quarterfinals vs. Georgia, won 4&3 vs. Texas A&M in the semifinals and earned a 2&1 victory in the finals vs. Vanderbilt.

The match came down to the wire behind Mississippi State’s Garrett Endicott  3&2 victory.

Once again, John DuBois was clutch for the Gators in conference match play. Last year the SEC Individual Champion won the match-clinching point in 19 holes to send Florida to the SEC Match Play Finals for the first time in program hisotyr.. His match vs. Harrison Davis featured eight holes halved. After going back and forth during holes 12-15, DuBois went ahead 1-up with a birdie on 17. Then they both recorded par on 18, clinching the victory for Florida.

The Gators travel to the Ben Hogan Collegiate (Oct. 3-4) next and conclude the fall at the Isleworth Collegiate (Oct. 23-25).
