TOLEDO, Ohio – Washington freshman Joshua Koo carded the second-lowest score of the final round, shooting a 4-under 67, as the UW men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Inverness Intercollegiate Tuesday.
Koo, from Cerritos, Calif., carded a bogey-free third round, making birdies on holes 7, 8, 10 and 13. His 67 was one stroke shy of the low round of the day.
Washington finished in 15th place overall in a tournament where no teams were under par overall. On Monday’s opening day of play, meant to include the first two rounds, weather caused multiple delays and no teams had finished both rounds before play was halted for the night. Additionally, Koo, who was the UW’s low scorer at the time, was disqualified in the first round for taking a shot after the horn had sounded to suspend play. Koo played his second and third rounds, but with no score in the first round, was unable to compete on the individual leaderboard.
“Overall, a tough week for us; we didn’t play at all and got punished,” said UW head coach Alan Murray. “One bright spot was the play of Joshua Koo today with his bogey-free 67 at Inverness. I think that’s as good a round as I have ever seen from a freshmen. He was ultra impressive today.
“I hope he will take great heart from that and realizes what he is capable of,” Murray continued. “We have some time off now before our next tournament and we will be able to get some work done and have some qualifying.”
Taehoon Song had the next-lowest third round score among the UW golfers, with a 2-over 73, making 16 pars and two bogies.
Bo Peng was the Huskies’ top overall finisher, with a 5-over 76 today and an 11-over total, tying him for 44th place. Robert Galligan carded a 4-over 75 in round three, leaving him tied for 57th place at 13-over. Teddy Lin joined Song in a tie for 67th after a 6-over 77 today.
“This week shows that we have to improve the level of our play,” Murray said. “We were really poor on and around the greens in general this week and playing with Texas Tech and Oklahoma really gave us a glimpse of what the level is for what our short games need to be to compete with the best teams.”
The Huskies will now have more than three weeks off before competing in the Georgia Collegiate, hosted by Georgia Tech, Oct. 21-23 at Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
