The University of Utah men’s golf team is preparing for the only east coast trip on their 2022-23 regular season schedule and it involves 54 holes at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, which takes place from Oct. 3-4 at the Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, N.Y.

This is the third tournament on the slate for the Utes, who received votes in the most recent Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and it will be the first time they’ve played in an event in New York under coach Garrett Clegg. The 2021 edition of the Hamptons Intercollegiate ended in a three-way tie, as Georgia Tech, Virginia and Northwestern shared the top spot.

THE FIELD
The only returning squad out of those three co-champions is Virginia and the Cavaliers will be one of nine schools the Utes will have to contend with. Loyola Maryland, Georgetown, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oregon State, Penn, Princeton and Yale will also by vying for the championship.

UTAH’S LINE-UP
Six Utah players will be hitting the links in East Hampton and the list includes Javier Barcos, Braxton Watts, Hunter Howe, Martín LeónDavis Johnson and Brandon Robison, who will be competing as an individual.

COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg
“The weather is supposed to be terrible,” said Clegg, “so its really hard to predict how the course will play. Whoever can keep positive and stay steady will play great and I believe this group is up to the challenge. This will be a major test of will and determination.”

LAST TIME OUT
The Utes’ eighth-place finish in the Husky Invitational, which took place from Sept. 19-20, was highlighted by several excellent rounds. Braxton Watts spent the tournament’s first two rounds shooting 1-under and recorded 10 birdies over the first 36 holes. Javier Barcos, who topped the squad by tying for 20th, was 1-over on day one and finished the afternoon by shooting below par on his final 15 holes. One of the highlights of the final day in Washington was Brandon Robison’s 1-under 71, which pushed him 15 spots up the leaderboard, and Jesper von Reedtz recorded a hole-in-one.
