Starkute Paces Cats in Darkness-Shortened Opening Day

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. – The opening day of the 2022 Windy City Classic came to an end midway through Arizona Women’s Golf second round due to darkness. The Wildcats had their entire lineup though the 12th hole of the second round of the day with a team score of 22-over. Arizona was paced through its sixth-place start by senior Gile Bite Starkute who ended the day in sixth place at 2-over par after shooting even par in the first round.

“We had a slow start, as a team, to the afternoon round, and that hurt our scoring by the time play was called due to darkness,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “We got off to a good start in the morning as Gile, Julia and Carolina carded quality scores to lead us. That gives me confidence that we can start tomorrow strong and let that momentum carry over from our second round into our third and final round.”

At the end of round one on Monday afternoon, Arizona had three players in the top 20 of the leaderboards. Starkute was tied for fifth at even par, Julia Misemer was a stroke behind her in a tie for 11th and Carolina Melgrati posted a 2-over round for 17th place. The Cats led the field in par-4 scoring in the first round as Starkute and Misemer both ranked in the top six individually.

The Wildcats were 10-over par on the front nine holes in the second round after carding a 6-over performance before the turn in the morning round.

Arizona will finish its second round on Tuesday morning before beginning the third and final round of the tournament.
