Maryland Finishes Second at Barbara Nicklaus Cup, Kanpai with Runner-Up Performance


DUBLIN, OH – Freshman Nicha Kanpai finished in a three-way tie for second at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup with her second top-10 performance Tuesday. Maryland in came second out of eight teams at 95 over par. 
 
Kanpai posted an overall score of 231 (75-80-76), which was 15 strokes over par. 
 
The Team
Junior Patricie Mackova finished in a two-way tie for sixth, posting 235 (77-83-75) (+19). This marks her third top-10 finish of the season.
 
Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a three-way tie for 11th, posting 240 (78-82-80) (+24).
 
Senior Angela Garvin finished in 31st, posting 254 (84-80-90) (+38).
 
Freshman AnPhi Le finished in 36th, posting 259 (84-82-93) (+43).
 
Maryland played the par-72 – 6,362-yard Cherokee Muirfield Village Golf Club, designed by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, husband of tournament host Barbara Nicklaus, over the two-day, 54-hole event. The venue also hosts the Memorial Tournament on the PGA TOUR, the course ranked as the 8th toughest course of the tour this season.
 

From the Coaches’ Eye – Hovland’s Analysis…

“This was a big week for the Terps,” said head coach Kelly Hovland. “Not only did we earn our second runner-up finish in three events and beat all the Big Ten schools (in the field), we leave Muirfield Village Golf Club with a belief in our ability to adapt to any situation. This is the hardest golf course I have ever coached on, and I am really proud of how hard we competed until the last hole.”
