JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Duke men’s golf team tees off in its first of three October events this week at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, held at Liberty National Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday. Liberty National, known for its views of the Manhattan skyline, provides Luke Sample a homecoming after he attended Trevor Day School across the river in Manhattan prior to his arrival to Duke.
“We’re really honored and privileged to play in this event,” said head coach Jamie Green. “Hats off to Georgetown and their staff. To have the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty as the backdrop is very cool for our student-athletes. We’re really thrilled to be here and to enjoy the competition. It’s a good test of golf, especially when the wind blows. We’re going to take it one hole and one shot at a time.”
The Blue Devils are one of 12 total teams in the field for the 38th edition of the event, joined by Boston College, Campbell, Columbia, Georgetown, Loyola, Miami (OH), Michigan, Penn State, Princeton, Seton Hall and Yale. Liberty National is playing as a par-72 at 7,387 yards for the tournament.
The full starting lineup for the Blue Devils consists of Sample, John Peters, Ian Siebers, Ethan Evans and Kelly Chinn. Peters, a sophomore, makes his 2022 debut in the starting lineup and is joined by his fellow sophomores Sample and Chinn. Siebers, a junior, is coming off a team-best 16th-place finish with a 3-over 219 at the Husky Invitational at the end of September. Evans, a freshman, had the second-best finish on the team at the Husky Invitational with his tie for 24th place at 6-over 223.
“Really excited about the five guys that we have here,” said Green. “Hopefully we have a right mix of guys who will take charge, post some good numbers, and we’ll see it where it ends up leaving us at the end of the week.”
In their last event, the Blue Devils finished in seventh place as a team at the Husky Invitational with a three-day team score of 881 (+17). Peters and Sample participated in the Husky Individual, with Peters finishing in third place after a final round 70 (-1) and a 54-hole score of 5-under 208. Sample turned in a career-best 67 (-4) in the final round of the Husky Individual to propel the sophomore to a tie for fourth place at 3-under 210.
