Navarrosa One Back, USC Women's Golf In The Hunt After Stephens Cup Opening Day

Junior Brianna Navarrosa wrapped play in second at 6-under while sophomore Amari Avery joined her in the top 10 to lead the No. 13 USC women’s golf team during the darkness-shortened two-round opener of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole G.C. in Juno Beach, Fla., on Monday (Oct. 10).

Wednesday’s champion of the seven-team event will be determined via match play between the top two stroke-play finishers after 54 holes while the third and fourth-place teams will play a consolation final match.

USC is tied for third at 6-under after a 3-under first-round 285 and an almost-competed second round at 3-under. Wake Forest is in first at 18-under while Stanford is second at 7-under. Duke is tied USC with South Carolina fifth at par, the trio of teams still to finish. Arkansas is sixth (7-over) and LSU is seventh (11-over).

Play will resume at 8 a.m. ET.

Navarrosa is two off the lead. She fired a season-best 3-under 69 in the first round, her seventh round under 70 of he career, that saw three birdies without a bogey. She is also 3-under through 15 in the second.

Avery is tied for seventh at 3-under. She opened with a 4-under 68 for her third sub-70 this season and the 13th of her career, moving her into a tie for eighth with All-American and former LPGA player Belen Mozo. She has four holes to complete.

Sophomore Xin (Cindy) Kou is tied for 17th at 1-over. Her opening 72 was her fifth par 72 this season in seven rounds. She has four holes left.

Freshman Catherine Park is 27th at 4-over. She battled in the second round, off-setting a double and triple with five birdies and an eagle and is finishing on 18.

Junior Christine Wang is tied for 29th at 6-over 150 (79-71). Her second round marked a season-best, her first sub par effort in seven outings. The round saw a 2-under back 9, including a stretch of three birdies in four holes between 12 and 15.
