Texas golf club broke code with strip club, HS golf team incident

Emory, Redlands tied for top spot

AUSTIN, Texas — Avery Ranch Golf Club violated an Austin zoning code when it allowed an adult entertainment club to host a tournament including topless women, an official said.

Austin City Council Member Mackenzie Kelly said she heard about the event when parents of Vista Ridge High School golf team members called her to complain. They told her that golf practice on Monday had been canceled because a tournament hosted by the Yellow Rose, an adult entertainment club, was happening at the course. Some parents also sent her photos of what they had seen, Kelly said.

The city of Austin will investigate a code violation that happened when the Yellow Rose strip club was allowed to host an adult entertainment event at the Avery Ranch Golf Club, a City Council member said.

“I’ve seen photos of women topless on the course passing out alcohol, which is concerning considering they were in a residential area,” she said. “At first I was very shocked and surprised that would happen.”

The Northwest Austin golf course is in Kelly’s district.

Avery Ranch Golf Club managers did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

The Vista Ridge golf coach sent a letter to parents Tuesday explaining why practice was canceled.

“A very inappropriate situation occurred at Avery Ranch,” the letter said. “When we arrived for practice, we discovered that the golf course was hosting an adult golf tournament in which adults were acting very inappropriately. Unfortunately, our golfers did witness some lewd behavior.”

A coach immediately canceled practice and had all players contact their parents to pick them up, the letter said.

The letter also stated that Vista Ridge golf coaches did not know about the tournament. The coaches spoke with a manager at the golf course who “indicated that he was not aware that these inappropriate actions would occur, he does not condone these actions, and Avery Ranch will not host this group in the future.”

Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park is part of the Leander school district.

The Yellow Rose tournament was a code violation because the golf course is not zoned as a commercial district, Kelly said. The club is zoned as a public utility district, which means that adult entertainment is not allowed, she said.

Managers at the Yellow Rose in Austin did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. The strip club posted comments on its Facebook page that said the event at the golf course Monday was a private annual…
