DURHAM – The seventh-ranked Duke women’s golf team will compete locally this week as the Blue Devils will see action in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, which will be contested at the Governor’s Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 17-18.
Each team will play 36 holes of stroke play followed by 18 on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will open action on Monday at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start on holes five through nine.
This will mark the 44th time Duke will compete in the Tar Heel Invitational with the Blue Devils bringing home the hardware a total of 16 times (2018, 2017, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1988. Duke head coach Dan Brooks has guided the Blue Devils to all 16 titles.
A total of 12 Blue Devils have claimed the Tar Heel Invitational individual title – Leona Maguire (2017, 2015), Amanda Blumenherst (2007), Leigh Anne Hardin (2003, 2000), Liz Janangelo (2003, 2002), Kristina Engstrom (2001), Candy Hannemann (2000, 1998), Jenny Chuasiriporn (1997) and Christine Casingal (1988).
Along with Duke, seeing action in the 2022 event will be North Carolina, Furman, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, UNC Wilmington, Princeton, Rollins, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Duke will feature a lineup of senior Erica Shepherd, juniors Phoebe Brinker and Anne Chen, sophomore Rylie Heflin and freshman Andie Smith.
Last season, Shepherd turned in a 10-under-par, 206, en route to finishing second by one stroke. She fired rounds of 66, 70 and 70.
The Blue Devils are coming off a third-place ledger in stroke play at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup this past week, before defeating South Carolina, 3-2, in match play in the third-place match. Duke shot 11-under-par over the final two rounds and was paced by four Blue Devils in the top 18 – Shepherd (7), Chen (T12), Smith (T14) and Brinker (T18).
