Women's Golf Hosts Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational Mon-Tue At Governor's Club

The University of North Carolina women’s golf team hosts the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 17-18, at the Governor’s Club in Chapel Hill.

Admission for the public is free. Play is scheduled to begin both days with shotgun starts at 9 a.m.

The Governor’s Club is located about six miles/13 minutes south of campus and is a gated, private community.  Please utilize the Mt. Carmel Church Rd. entrance at 10100 Governors Drive, Chapel Hill NC 27517 to attend the tournament.

A Governor’s Club staff member will be at the gate to facilitate entry.  Fans should tell the parking attendant they are there for the “UNC Ruth’s Chris Golf Event.”

The Tar Heels are coming off team and individual wins at the Ivy Intercollegiate at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.

Carolina won the team title by five strokes over Florida State and senior Krista Junkkari was co-medalist after shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round.

It was Junkkari’s first career college win and UNC’s first team championship in five seasons.

Junkkari and fellow senior Kayla Smith have won UNC’s last two tournaments with Smith taking home the individual title at Texas A&M’s “Mo”Morial in September. That marked the first time two different Tar Heels won consecutive starts since Kelly McCall and Marcy Newton accomplished the feat in 1997.

Sophomore Riley Quartermain and freshmen Vilde Nystrøm and Megan Streicher joined Junkkari and Smith on the winning team at Baltusrol.

Day two of the Ivy Intercollegiate featured individual matches against players from the Ivy League. Smith, Nystrøm and Streicher all won their matches and Quartermain earned a draw.

Smith and Junkkari also have moved into the top two spots on Carolina’s all-time scoring list, having reached the 20-career tournament threshold necessary for qualifying.

Smith is currently the all-time leader at 73.46 strokes in 20 starts. Junkkari is second at 73.68 in 22 events.

Freshman Inez Ng will make it three freshmen in the lineup at the Tar Heel, joining her classmates Nystrøm and Streicher along with Junkkari and Smith. Quartermain, juniors Natalia Aseguinolaza and Crista Izuzquiza and senior Aleks Golde will complete as individual entries.
