Michigan State, Hackett Set Program Records in Tie for Second Place at Quail Valley Collegiate

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team stormed back in the final round of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational behind a record-setting team round of 23-under par 265 and finished in a tie for second place among 16 teams in the tournament at Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla.

The Spartans entered the final round of play tied for ninth place overall, but fired a tournament-best 23-under par 265 – the best 18 hole score by the team in program history – and finished tied for second overall at 36-under par 828.

North Florida led from start to finish and posted a 39-under par 825 to top the field. The Spartans finished in a tie for second place with Liberty at 36-under par 828.  Cincinnati placed fourth at 34-under par 830 and Northwestern rounded out the top-five teams at 33-under par 831.

MSU’s score of 828 is tied for the second-lowest 54-hole tournament in program history.

“I can’t begin to explain how proud I am of the guys for the way they battled today,” Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. “We were disappointed with our second round and came out ready to pounce and every one did just that today. I think a day like this shows our guys what we’ve been saying to them and that is that they have the ability to be a very dangerous team.

“Drew just crushed it today and I know he’s been waiting for things to fall for him. They did this week and certainly did today and I hope this is just the start for him. It was a great weekend for us and I can’t thank the staff at Quail Valley Golf Club enough for making their home OUR home over the last few days.”

Hackett, a transfer from UNC Wilmington, fired an 8-under par 64 in the final round and finished the tournament in a tie for second place at 16-under par 200. Hackett’s score of 200 is the best 54-hole score in MSU history, topping the mark of 201 set by Donnie Trosper at the NCAA Pullman Regional in 2019. Hackett’s 64 on Tuesday ties the best single round in program history, set twice by current PGA professional Ryan Brehm (2007 Fighting Irish Invitational, 2006 Big Ten Championships). Hackett finished second in the tournament with 18 birdies.

Senior Bradley Smithson tied for 29th place at 6-under par 210 (72-72-66). He shot a 6-under par 66 in the final round, with eight birdies and had 14 for the tournament.
