ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team concluded the fall schedule on Sunday at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga.
The Demon Deacons were led by another impressive performance from freshman Boyd Owens who finished as the highest Wake Forest player on the individual leaderboard. The Deacs as a team placed 14th.
Owens, who came into the round tied for 50th, rose up the leaderboard 14 spots on Sunday to tie for 36th at the event. The Baton Rouge, La. native was steady throughout the opening nine hoel with a birdie, a bogey and seven pars. At the turn, he claimed birdies on back-to-back holes to move 1-under-par for this round.
Bouncing back from his second bogey of the day, Owens circled the score card one more time on the way in to finish as the lone Demon Deacon below par on Sunday. This concluded a special start to Owens career which included the lowest first career round in program history dating back to the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, turning in a 63 (-7).
For the third consecutive day, junior Michael Brennan turned in a final score of 73 (+1) to finish tied for 41st on the individual leaderboard. Senior Mark Power had the eighth most birdies in the field with 15 in the competition including five on the final day.
The nationally-ranked Demon Deacons are back on the course in January when they head out to California for the Southwestern Invitational from Jan. 30-Feb. 1. Last season, Brennan nearly won the event individually, finishing two strokes back at 6-under-par and tied for second.
