State's Big Day Captures Daniel Island Intercollegiate Title

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State men’s golf team won the Daniel Island Intercollegiate on Tuesday after overcoming a three-shot deficit. Four Bulldogs finished in the top 20, and the Bulldogs’ team total 289 in the final round was tied for the lowest round of the event.

The victory marks the third tournament title under head coach Dusty Smith, tying him for the sixth-most team titles in program history.

“I am so proud of this team and how they battled today,” Smith said. “The guys did a great job of finishing the round and being better at the end. Hunter [Logan] really stepped up big for us today. Ford [Clegg] and Austin [Vukovits] made some clutch putts down the stretch for us to be able to secure the win. It was a total team effort this week and I’m proud of all the guys. Winning is never easy and something this team will not take for granted.”

State entered the day three shots back of Florida Gulf Coast for the tournament lead. On a challenging course, MSU shot 1-over while FGCU was 7-over in Round 3. That was more than enough separation for the Bulldogs, who finished with a three-stroke lead over the Eagles and a 12-stroke lead over third-place Campbell.

Ford Clegg was State’s top individual, tying for third. He made five birdies and shot 1-under 71 in the final round. Clegg now boasts six career top-five finishes, including two this season. He finished 2-over for the tournament.

Austin Vukovits, the reigning SEC Men’s Golfer of the Week who won individual honors in his last outing, placed fifth after shooting par for the day. He was inside the top five after each round of the tournament, and finished 3-over overall.

Hunter Logan tied for 19th after shooting his best round in the tournament at 1-under, marking his 11th career top-20 finish.

Ruan Pretorius finished the tournament in a tie for 27th, and Pedro Cruz Silva finished tied for 31st, which was a 26-spot improvement over the final two rounds.

“All 13 of our guys have bought into our culture and what we are trying to do here at Mississippi State,” Smith added. “I want them to enjoy this moment. We have a lot of work to do this offseason in order for us to become the team we know we can be. We look forward to some good rest but will be ready to get back to work.”
