Ford Named ACC Golfer Of The Month

University of North Carolina sophomore David Ford is the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for October.

In three starts in October the Peachtree Corners, Ga., native won the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at Seminole Golf Club, tied for second in the Williams Cup at Eagle Point in Wilmington and tied for sixth at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club.

Ford led the Tar Heels to team titles in all three tournaments, a first for the program since 1984-85.

The 2022 ACC Freshman of the Year averaged 68.89 strokes per round and shot at or below par in all nine rounds in October. That included six rounds under par and three in the 60s.

Ford won his first collegiate event at the Stephens Cup, shooting 16-under 200 to win by four strokes over a field that included Stanford, Texas, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Arkansas and Notre Dame.

He shot a bogey-free 10-under-par 62 in the second round of the Stephens Cup, which tied the UNC record for score to par in a round. Ford made eight consecutive birdies en route to the 62, which tied his career low round.

Ford averaged 69.40 strokes per round in five tournaments this semester. That is on pace to set Carolina’s single-season scoring average.

The Tar Heels concluded the fall portion of its 2022-23 schedule No. 4 in the country in Golfweek’s rankings and No. 5 by Golfstat and the Golfweek/Bushnell Coaches poll.

Golfweek ranks Ford No. 7 in the country.
