Golf Inc. 2023 Visionaries: John Pugliese

When Pugliese began working in the golf industry, two things were said to him: No one is going to buy a house again, and no one was going to play golf again.

“It was a huge motivating factor for me,” he said. “I saw the opportunity.”

He joined the Landscapes Unlimited team in 2011 and works closely with the leads of each of the companies within the Landscapes Unlimited umbrella to ensure that the company’s mission, values and industry-leading expertise produce tangible value for its clients and is also a rewarding work environment for its employees.

Landscapes Unlimited is one of the largest organizations in the golf and recreational development and operations industry. The company owns or manages over 50 properties throughout the U.S., Canada and China.

Risk, resources and relationships occupy his current time with the company, he said.

There are several accomplishments under his leadership at Landscapes Unlimited that indeed make him a visionary and contemporary innovator.

They include pushing modern-day marketing tactics to collect and granularize demographic and behavioral data to fill more tee times to establishing a new Capital Planning Services division, taking new and existing golf courses through a planning exercise for near-term benefit and long-term sustainability.

Under his leadership, the company brings in guest speakers to train on-site teams with best management practices, as well as for personal and career development.

“We want to maintain momentum and experiences that are fresh and relevant,” he said.

With an increased level of cooperation and awareness around golf, Pugliese said it’s no doubt that golf entertainment has been good for the game.

Being able to maximize the cost influence curve and thinking more algorithmically to understand customer behavior is key, he added. The company provides experience-based programming with financial forecasting.
