MADISON, Wis.McCord Grice is one of the Badger men’s golf newest members. The freshman from Atlanta, Georgia made his debut at the 2022 Badger Invitational and is looking forward to what the spring may bring.

Take a quick look into McCord’s life:

What are your goals for yourself for the spring season?

My goals for the spring season are to build upon my progress in the fall season, continue getting better each day and make at least one spring lineup.

What makes Wisconsin golf special?

Wisconsin golf is special for many reasons — the facility, resources, and equipment. However, what makes our program completely different are the people. From the freshman to the seniors, everyone on the team is very tight and we all hang out off of the course. You can go to anyone on the team for advice, to go workout, or to do something random like watch football or play basketball. I think that really speaks to the culture that the coaches and upperclassmen have built here.

Favorite memory with the team?

My favorite memory from being on the team was going to Lambeau Field for a Packer game. Five of us drove up together for the Titans game. We all stood there in the snow for three hours and cheered on the team. Plus, the couple-hour drive from Madison to Green Bay was a great bonding experience as well. And even though we lost, it was an amazing experience.

A golf-related favorite memory of mine was club speed training with Spencer Turtz, we had a goal to reach 120 mph club head speed. After a couple of days of grinding, we had the music turned all the way up and Spencer finally hit 120. We went crazy and ran around the facility just super pumped up! After him, I also hit 120 and there was a second round of excitement. It’s very cool to have that environment and to have people on the team that push each other to become better every day.

What is something golf has taught you?
Golf has taught me that work ethic, confidence and determination can help you accomplish your goals in life. The work ethic I show at the golf course every day can be applied to any number of dreams I have off the course. Golf has also taught me independence. Us golfers tend to spend a lot of time alone and being self-reliant is a very important step in order to succeed not only in golf, but in life as well.
