Ereño Leads Bruins on Day One at Southwestern Invitational


WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The UCLA men’s golf team shot a 7-over 295 in its first round at the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club on Monday. Sophomore Pablo Ereño recorded the Bruins’ lone under-par score of the day with a 1-under 71.
 
No. 20 Texas owns a five-stroke lead over No. 4 Arizona State after shooting an 18-under 270. Longhorn Jacob Sosa sits atop the leaderboard following a tournament-record 11-under 61. The Bruins are currently in ninth place out of 12 teams.
 
Ereño, who is tied for 15th out of the field of 66 golfers, went even par on the front nine with two birdies on the par-5 fourth and par-5 sixth. He birdied the par-5 12th and par-4 16th later in the day before a bogey on 17.
 
Freshman Kyle An owned the Bruins’ second-best score with a 1-over 73. He had three birdies in his round.
 
After going 2-under through his first seven holes, Omar Morales finished 2-over 74 with four bogeys on his remaining 11. Sophomore Alvaro Muller rounded out UCLA’s counting scores with a 5-over 77. He parred seven holes on the back nine and ended his day with a birdie on the par-4 18th.
