WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The UCLA men’s golf team shot its best round of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club with a 3-over 291 on Wednesday to rise another two spots on the leaderboard and finish in a tie for fifth (+16). It was the Bruins’ best finish in a tournament so far this season.
UCLA totaled four eagles in its round today with two from senior Mason Greene and one apiece from Omar Morales and Alvaro Muller.
No. 20 Texas won the tournament by 15 strokes at 14-under (270-290-290). Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan was the individual champion at 9-under (70-68-69).
Sophomore Pablo Ereño tied for ninth (-1) for his first top 10 finish of the season and the second of his career. Ereño shot a 3-over 75 today after a 1-under 71 and 3-under 69 in his first two rounds.
Morales jumped into the top 20 with a 2-under 70, his best round of the tournament. He finished tied for 19th (+2). Morales’ day was highlighted by an eagle three on the par-5 15th and a birdie on 18 to close out the round.
Greene followed up his 2-under 70 performance on day two with another under par round of 71 today. Greene eagled two par 5s on the sixth and 12th. It was the first time in his collegiate career that Greene posted back-to-back under par rounds. He tied for 25th (+6) for the best finish of his collegiate career when competing as a member of the starting five.
Muller was the Bruins fourth counting score of the day with a 3-over 75. His eagle came on the 12th as well. He tied for 57th (+18).
Freshman Kyle An tied for 54th (+17).
Next Up: The Bruins will compete at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waimea, Hawaii, at the Hapuna Golf Course from Feb. 9-11.
