Cats Battle Through First Day in Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – A difficult Sunday at the Guadalajara Country Club challenged Arizona Women’s Golf through the first 27 holes of the Collegiate Invitational at GCC as the Wildcats finished the first day of the event in a tie for eighth place at 26-over par. Senior Gile Bite Starkute led Arizona in round one at 1-over with Lilas Pinthier and Carolina Melgrati pacing the Cats through the first half of the second round at 2-over par.

“Today was not the type of performance we had hoped for and prepared for, but we will come out on Monday with a mindset to improve,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “I was proud to see our team continue to battle and compete when things got challenging, which is a testament to our growth and development. This group is ready to play some great golf for 27 holes tomorrow and put today behind us.”

Not a single program in the 12-team field broke par on Sunday’s 27-hole opener to the tournament with Georgia and Baylor tied atop the leaderboard at 7-over par. Arizona’s eighth-place tie is with Ole Miss and Maryland at 26-over par. The trio of teams sit six strokes behind Michigan and nine strokes back of Tennessee entering Monday.

Starkute is the top Wildcat on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 16th at 4-over par after Sunday’s 27-hole opener. The senior was at her best on GCC’s shortest holes, finishing the day in a tie for 4th in par-3 scoring.

The Wildcats will complete the last nine holes of round two in the morning before beginning the third and final round on Monday afternoon.
