Big Island Bound: Men's Golf Heads to Amer Ari


The Arizona State men’s golf team is back in action this week, heading to the Amer Ari for its second tournament of the spring season.

THE LINEUP

The Sun Devils will send Ryggs Johnston, Preston Summerhays, Josele Ballester, Luke Potter and Michael Mjaaseth to the Amer Ari. Kiko Coelho and Gabe Salvanera will compete in the individual bracket. All seven Sun Devils are in action for the second time this season and first since Maui Jim, where Mjaaseth and Coelho were in the individual bracket. 

THE COURSE

The Hapuna Golf Course is a 6,895 yard, par 72 course. The tournament will feature 54 holes over three rounds. Each round will commence at 7:30 a.m. local time.

THE FIELD

The Sun Devils are one of 20 total teams in the field. Stanford, Oregon, Washington, UCLA and Oregon State join ASU from the Pac-12. 

LAST YEAR HERE

The Sun Devils finished third as a team and Masen Anderson was third at the 2022 Amer Ari. The team carded a 268-273-281=822/-42 while Anderson fired 65-69-66=200/-16/T3.

LAST TIME OUT

Luke Potter finished fourth and ASU finished third at the 2023 Southwestern Invitational. Potter fired a career-best 7-under 65 in the first round of the event. He eventually recorded his second consecitive top four finish. Potter tied for the tournament lead in birdies (16) and score on par-4 holes (-4). Additionally, ASU’s 59 birdies were good for second most in the 12-team field.

DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE

Incredible oppurtunity has arisen from the roster turnover and qualifying rounds have turned into a true test. In it’s four tournaments during the fall, ASU used three different lineups. ASU’s first tournament of the spring, the Southwestern Invitational, featured a new lineup. All seven Sun Devils have contributed to the team score this season.
