Cal Takes 4th at Collegiate Invitational

Two Bears Finish Top-13

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The Cal women’s golf team closed out the Collegiate Invitational on Monday at Guadalajara Country Club with one of the best final rounds of the competition to take fourth place.

The Bears recorded the third-lowest score in the field with a 5-over 293 in round three, 14 strokes better than their previous round. They finished 30-over par for the tournament, ahead of top-13 programs Arizona (+33), Virginia (+43) and Ole Miss (+50).

“We responded well to yesterday. To come out, finish that second round and turn it around like we did in those last 18, I was really impressed with the effort today,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “I think that showed a lot of grit and character on our part to keep it going.”

Graduate Annika Borrelli put together the best final round on the team, birdying on three of the last four holes for an even-par 72. That was tied for the eighth-best round three score. She finished in ninth overall at 5-over for the tournament.

Junior Cristina Ochoa was consistent throughout the competition, carding a 75, 74 and 74 over the three rounds to finish tied for 13th.

“Annika finishing the way she did with three birdies in the last four holes was pretty huge,” McDaniel said. “Top-10 and top-15 finishes for Annika and Cristina leading the way is notable. It’s going to be a really exciting next couple of weeks especially with this finish really putting some stock in what our team is capable of.”

After a slow start on day one, junior Mika Jin had an excellent final two rounds, scoring a 74 and 73 to lead the Bears over the last 36 holes.

No. 24 Baylor won the tournament at 8-over par, 10 strokes ahead of second place No. 10 Florida State. Baylor’s Rosie Belsham claimed first shooting 6-under for the tournament.

The Bears will have several weeks off before heading to Sacramento for the Gunrock Invitational Feb. 27-28 at Del Paso Country Club.
