RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The University of Colorado women’s golf team is in 12th place after the first two rounds of the San Diego State Classic, shooting a 36-hole total of 61-over par, 637, at The Farms Golf Club on Monday.
No. 30 ranked Iowa State is in the lead at 16-over, thanks in part to the day’s best team round with a 1-over 289 over the second 18 holes. The Cyclones hold a six-stroke lead over No. 39 Georgia and 10-stroke advantage over No. 50 Denver.
Colorado had a rough first round, but had an admirable bounce back in the second. The Buffaloes found themselves at 43-over, 331, after the first 18 holes, but faired 25 strokes better the second time around the course.
All five Buffs had bounce-back second rounds, shooting lower scores than in the first, highlighted by CU’s two freshmen Morgan Miller and Makenzie Cooper who both improved by double-digit figures.
Miller led Colorado overall for the day, sitting in a tie for 36th place at 14-over, 158. She shot a 2-over, 74, in the second round, trimming 10 strokes off her first-round score.
Cooper had an even bigger bounce back between rounds. After logging the team’s high round of the day with an 88, she slashed 14 strokes off that mark in the second round to match her classmate Miller’s 2-over, 74 in the second.
Cooper got an early birdie on the second hole of her second round on the 474-yard, par 5 No. 18 and stayed at 1-under through the next eight holes before dropping back to 1-over at the turn. She parred five of her last six holes to finish off the day. Overall, she is tied for 52nd at 18-over, 162.
“It was a horrible first round, but I’m proud of the freshmen and the comeback they both made,” Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. “(The Farms) is a difficult course that takes a great deal of concentration. Hopefully everyone’s focus will be there tomorrow.”
Sophomore Natalie Vo sits one stroke behind Miller, tied for 42nd at 15-over, 159. Vo had Colorado’s low first round at 8-over, 80, and knocked a stroke off that for a second round 79.
Lauren Gooding is tied for 47th at 17-over, 161. Gooding matched Vo’s second round 79, rebounding from an 82 in the first round. Junior Hailey Schalk is tied for 56th at 21-over, 165.
