Sophomore Amari Avery fired a final-round 69 while sophomore Xin (Cindy) Kou finished a season-best tie for fifth as USC tied for third at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge on Tuesday (Feb. 14) at the Palos Verdes G.C.
The Trojans turned in the third-lowest final round and tied for third with Baylor at a combined 12-over 864 (290-287-287), six back of first-place Oregon and one behind top-ranked Stanford.
Kou got off to a slow start with three straight bogeys but finished the final 15 holes at 1-under at par 213 (72-68-73). The finish bettered her previous season-best of a tie for seventh at the Windy City Collegiate Classic. She has three top 17s this year and hasn’t finished lower than a tie for 22nd.
Avery marched up 10 spots on the final-day leaderboard to tie for 12th at 2-over 215 (73-73-69). Among those she was tied with was freshman teammate Catherine Park (72-72-71), whose finish — buoyed by three straight birdies at one point — matched her season best.
For Avery, it was her team-best sixth round in the 60s this season and it moved her into a tie for fourth on USC’s career chart in the category with 16. The tie for 12th was her fifth straight top 14 this season after starting the season with a tie for 23rd.
That wasn’t the end of the superlatives for USC. Junior Christine Wang, competing as an individual, registered a career low final round of 1-under 70 to tie for 24th at 6-over 219 (74-75-70). Her only blemish was a double bogey on 9.
Rounding out USC’s efforts in Palos Verdes was senior Malia Nam with a tie for 37th at 9-over 222 (73-75-74) and junior Brianna Navarrosa with a tie for 50th at 12-over 225 (75-74-76).
