Peter Jung Fires 4-Under 68 to Lead Cougs on Final Day at John Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawaii  – Sophomore Peter Jung fired a closing-round 68 to lead four Washington State players under par during the final round of play at the 2023 John Burns Intercollegiate Friday on the 6,905-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Cougars finished the third round with their best 18-hole score of the tournament, posting a 9-under par, 279, to finish tied for 15th in their spring season debut.
 
Jung’s four-under 68 Friday included five birdies against just one bogey, allowing him to finish the 54-hole tournament at an even-par 216. Junior Preston Bebich also had five birdies on his round, finishing the day with a three-under 69. Bebich led WSU in Hawaii as he completed the two-day event at 1-under, 215, capitalizing on the par 4’s as he finished a combined 5-under on those holes.
 
Freshman Sam Renner followed up his second-round 68 with a one-under 71 Friday, completing the three-round tournament alongside Bebich at 1-under, 215. Renner had two birdies and an eagle on his final round, finishing under par for the second event of his young career.
 
Junior Jaden Cantafio had his best round of the tournament Friday, covering the course in a 1-under, 71, which included four birdies. Cantafio finished his three rounds at 1-over, 217, taking advantage of the par 3 holes as his ended second among the 126 competitors with a 2.83 scoring average on those holes.
 
Senior Pono Yanagi, who opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 Thursday, recorded four birdies on his final round en route to a 4-over 76. Yanagi tied with Jung for the team lead with 12 birdies on the tournament and ended his 54-hole event at 4-over, 220.
 

Brigham Young walked away with the team title, finishing at a blistering 54-under, 810, 18 strokes ahead of second-place Arizona and 22 shots head of Texas A&M. Texas A&M’s Sam Bennett and California’s Sampson Zheng tied for medalist honors as both completed the 54 holes at 18-under par, 198.
 
Washington State is next in action Monday when it begins play at The Prestige, a 54-hole, three-day event played on the PGA West-Norman Course in Palm Desert, Calif.
