Women's Golf Competes In Moon Golf Invitational

The Carolina women’s golf team competes in the Moon Golf Invitational February 19-21 at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla.

The Tar Heels are one of 17 teams competing, including two top-10, six top-25 and 13 top-50 teams based on the current Golfstat rankings.

Top-25 teams in the field are No. 7 Florida State, No. 9 LSU, No. 17 Auburn, No. 19 Vanderbilt, No. 21 UCF and No. 25 Arkansas. They are joined by UNC, Alabama, Augusta, Clemson, Florida, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern and Virginia Tech.

The Tar Heel lineup features two seniors, a junior and a pair of freshmen, including Crista Izuzquiza, a junior from Madrid; Krista Junkkari, a senior from Elimäki, Finland; Kayla Smith, a senior from Burlington, N.C.; Vilde Nystrøm, a freshman from Stavanger, Norway; and Megan Streicher, a freshman from Boland, South Africa.

This same group of Tar Heels finished third in September in the Texas A&M “Mo”morial, shooting consecutive rounds of 8-under 280 in the final 36 holes.

Izuzquiza led the Tar Heels with a 23rd-place finish at UNC’s previous tournament, the Collegiate Invitational February 5-6 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Izuzquiza shot 1-under-par 71 in the third and final round of that event.

Junkkari leads the Tar Heels in scoring average this season at 72.59 strokes per round. Smith is next at 72.79.
