Smith's 69 Leads Women's Golf Up The Leader Board


University of North Carolina senior Kayla Smith shot a 3-under-par 69 as the Tar Heels beat five higher-ranked teams today with a 3-under-par aggregate score in the second round of the Moon Golf Invitational Monday at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla.
 
The Tar Heels improved four spots in the standings to 11th place in the 17-team field. Carolina is even-par 576 after two rounds of action with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday.
 
Carolina is currently second among six ACC schools in the field. The Tar Heels were six shots better than seventh-ranked Florida State in today’s round and are one shot ahead of the Seminoles and Virginia Tech heading into tomorrow’s third round.
 
Smith (Burlington, N.C.) led Carolina with six birdies today. Megan Streicher followed her 67, the third-best ever by a Tar Heel freshman, with a 74, and senior Krista Junkkari shot 70, her second consecutive round under par, and are tied for 20th place at 3-under 141.
 
Crista Izuzquiza is 2 over (74-72–146) after an even-par 72 today.
 
Ninth-ranked LSU shot 14-under 274 today and is 26 under for the first two rounds. The Tigers have a nine-shot lead over Auburn and are 11 ahead of third-place UCF and Northwestern.
 
A pair of LSU Tigers, Carla Tejedo Mulet and Ingrid Lundblad, are among the leaders at 10 under and 9 under, respectively. Tejedo Mulet has a one-shot advantage over Lindblad and three others.
