PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida — Vanderbilt took control of the Watersound Invitational on Monday, surging up the leaderboard to take a commanding lead over second-place Georgia Tech.

Vandy went 15-under-par as a team and is now 24-under-par of the tournament, eight shots ahead of the Yellow Jackets. Tech and Vanderbilt were tied for the tournament lead after 18 holes.

“It was a really good day today and I’m really proud of how our guys fought,” Vandy head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “We wanted to come out with a sense of urgency about what we were trying to do and I thought the guys did a great job owning that and being ready to go. All of our guys are competing to high standards and looks like they are having fun.”

Cole Sherwood continued to play impressive golf. The junior scored four birdies on a bogey-free front nine and sits tied for third at 9-under-par, two strokes back of Florida State’s Frederik Kjettrup for the individual lead.

Teammate Gordon Sargent (-6, 6th) shot a 66 and rose into sixth place. The sophomore had seven birdies Monday.

Sherwood, Sargent and Matthew Riedel (-5, tied for eighth), all find themselves inside the top 10.

Wells Williams is tied for 12th at 3-under-par for the tournament after a 70 on Monday and Jackson Van Paris (-1) is tied for 19th. Reid Davenport, playing as an individual, is tied for 28th at 1-over-par.

“Our focus tomorrow needs to be on going out and taking another step towards being the team we know we can be,” Limbaugh said. “There are clear standards in our program and it’s everyone’s job to compete to those standards. It’s never easy or comfortable, but you have to embrace it and allow it to motivate you to be the best player you can be.

“We appreciate all our fans that have come out this week and would love to see more black and gold out there Tuesday supporting our guys.”

Vanderbilt will look to win its third tournament in a row and 10th in the last calendar year when it tees off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday alongside Georgia Tech and Florida State. Live scoring for the event can be found HERE.
