Wells Leads Men’s Golf to Seventh Place Finish at Dorado Beach Collegiate


DORADO, PUERTO RICO — Rutgers men’s golf had a strong showing at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico, finishing seventh out of 14 teams. The Scarlet Knights were highlighted by Luke Wells, who earned a team best T-16th place.
 
Rutgers earned a final score of 849 (-15), recording totals of 288, 282, and 279, in the first, second, and third rounds, respectively.
 
Senior captain, Wells, finished with a score of 209 (-7). He played to totals of 72 (0), 67 (-5), 70 (-2), with his second round score being the team low of the three day tournament. The Springfield, Ohio native also secured a team leading 17 birdies.
 
Noah Kumar ended the tournament with a score of 211 (-5) and in a tie for 24th place. The Sarasota, Fla. native started off the competition strong with birdies on the first three holes. He finished the first round with a score of 69 (-3), putting him in a tie for 12th place at the end of day one.
 
The junior matched his day one score in the second round, and finished day three with a score of 73 (+1).
 
Weston Jones was the third Scarlet Knight to finish under par for RU. The sophomore played to a total of 214 (-2), earning a T-34th finish.
 
Rhett Sellers and James Newton also had solid performances for Rutgers, earning scores of 219 (+3) and 226 (+10), respectively. Both golfers recorded one eagle apiece in the tournament.
 
The Scarlet Knights are set to take part in the Colleton River Collegiate in Blufton, S.C., on March 6-7.
