Last week was quite the week for Lily May Humphreys at Modderfontein Golf Club as she secured her maiden victory on the LET.
The 20-year-old started her year on the Sunshine Ladies Tour and hadn’t finished outside of the top 10 in the first four events.
Rounds of 70 (-3), 70 (-3), 73 (E) and 67 (-6) saw the English star triumph by two shots and win for the first time on Tour.
As we head straight to Cape Town for this week’s Investec South African Women’s Open, there hasn’t been much time to process what has happened, but it has started to become reality for Humphreys.
“It was unbelievable,” said the 2021 LET Access Series Order of Merit champion. “It has started to sink in what happened on Saturday.
“My phone was blowing up over the weekend, but I feel a little bit more normal now and I’m more ready to get prepared for this week and start tomorrow again.
“Everyone at home is just so happy and excited for me. I think everyone back at home is going to be so excited to see me when I get back to Royal Norwich and Stoke by Nayland. Pretty much anyone I know is going to want to see me. It’s cool.”
Having improved her status on the LET, there is a lot more opportunity for Humphreys and she will now get into more events throughout the year.
The first of which is the Aramco Team Series presented by Public Investment Fund – Singapore next week.
And despite the fact she’ll have played for six weeks in a row by that point, Humphreys couldn’t turn that opportunity down.
She explained: “I will play Singapore next week, I’ve never been before and with the break afterwards I thought I could power through and play seven weeks in a row.”
Humphreys now sits in a share of second place in the 2023 Race to Costa del Sol and leads the 2023 Investec Order of Merit on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.
This week sees a different challenge at Steenberg Golf Club, but the LET winner is hoping to stick to her game plan and play to her strengths.
She added: “The wind can get up. It’s quite a different golf course to last week. I am going to try to stick to the game plan that I’ve chosen this week and try and play my best golf and see what happens.
“My course management is quite good, plus a little bit of short game and trying to be patient. I found that I was quite good at being patient last week, so I think that will be a strength for me this week.”
